Galo Herrera, a Mexican national, was arraigned in Westchester County Court on Monday afternoon, Feb. 24 on rape and sexual assault charges after being apprehended by Mexican authorities and extradited to New York, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office announced on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

According to prosecutors, between December 2006 and January 2007, Herrera forcibly raped a young girl under 13 years of age. He then fled before he could be apprehended, officials said.

In 2008, he was indicted on one count of predatory sexual assault against a child, two counts of first-degree rape, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

During his court appearance on Monday, Herrera pleaded not guilty and was remanded to the custody of the Westchester County Department of Correction pending further proceedings, the DA's Office said.

"Justice has no expiration date. The defendant’s horrendous conduct, as alleged in the indictment, is no less shocking nearly two decades later," said Westchester DA Susan Cacace, who continued, "I am grateful to our law enforcement partners in Mexico and the US who brought Mr. Herrera to answer for these charges."
